Version 1.75s
Welcome to Step-Up Program Manager with WorkSpace. This document tells you
everything you need to know to get up and running as quickly as possible.
This document is organized into the following sections:
1. Introduction.
2. Installation.
3. Uninstall.
4. Purchase Information.
5. Technical Support numbers.
6. Our favorite features.
7. FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)
8. How to reach Us.
------------
Introduction
------------
We designed Step-Up Program Manager to be especially easy to learn and
use. We started with the skills you already have from using Windows'
Program Manager and added dozens of enhancements that you'll
certainly find indispensable.
After installation, some of our new features are immediately evident,
but you'll notice that Step-Up Program Manager still looks nearly
identical to Windows Program Manager. We've done this intentionally
to allow you the opportunity to return to work without delay.
Everything you know how to do with Windows Program Manager works the
same in Step-Up Program Manager. All menus, keystrokes and groups
are unchanged, just enhanced with dozens of new features!
WorkSpace may be something new to you. WorkSpace allows you to
create as many "virtual" desktops as you'd like and switch between
them easily. Now you can eliminate desktop clutter by creating new
desktops. Run related sets of applications on each desktop for easy
organization. The mini-view window gives you a clear view of what
each desktop looks like.
------------
Installation
------------
1. Insert the Step-Up Program Manager installation disk in drive A:
2. From Windows Program Manager's File menu, select Run.
3. Type A:INSTALL and press Enter (or click on "OK")
4. Follow the instructions on the screen (some notes and hints follow)
The installation program asks you two questions
1. "Do you want to make Step-Up Program Manager your Windows shell?"
If you don't already know what your Windows Shell is, it's the
program that Windows runs first every time it starts. The default
program that Windows runs at startup is Windows' Program Manager. By
checking the box next to this question, you are telling Windows to
use Step-Up Program Manager in place of Windows Program Manager as
your shell. We recommend that you install Step-Up Program Manager as
your Windows shell.
2. "Do you want to add WorkSpace to the StartUp Group"
Important Note:
---------------
WorkSpace is complimentary and is immediately unlocked once you've
purchased Step-Up Program Manager. Until then, it is locked and will
only display a short reminder message when you try to run it.
Any program that you add to the StartUp group will be lauched
automatically by Step-Up Program Manager each time you start
windows. By adding WorkSpace to your StartUp Group, it will run and
restore your desktops each time you start windows. We recommend that
you allow the install program to add WorkSpace to your StartUp
group.
Installation should take about one minute (or less). When completed,
you must restart Windows so that the changes you've made to your
system during the installation of Step-Up Program Manager can take
effect. If Step-Up Program Manager is your new Windows shell, you'll
see it where Windows Program Manager used to be.
---------
Uninstall
---------
We hope that you'll like Step-Up Program Manager and will purchase
it. However, if it doesn't suite your needs we've supplied a
convenient uninstall program that will quickly remove Step-Up Program
Manager and restore Window's original program manager as your system
shell. Since Step-Up Program Manager reads and writes the same group
files as Windows' program manager, any changes you've made to your
groups (like installing other products) will still be there.
We'd like to know why you chose not to use Step-Up Program Manager.
Was there a feature you were looking for or a problem you were
having? Please send us a FAX or write to us so that we can use your
comments to improve Step-Up products. Our address info can be found
at the end of this document.

Purchase Information
--------------------
When you're ready to purchase Step-Up Program Manager, select
"Purchase Now" from the sign-on screen. We now offer the opportunity
to transmit your credit card purchase electronically using your
modem. The call takes about 30 seconds and the unlock code for WorkSpace
is returned to you immediately. If you don't have a modem, don't worry,
you can still give us a call or send us a check.
Step-Up Program Manager is $19.95 (US Dollars)
WorkSpace v1.0 is FREE with your purchase.

Answers to common problems appear below in the "Trouble Shooting" section.
Before calling, please look for the answer to your question there.
--------------------------
Where do you go from here?
--------------------------
You'll find that the on-line help is an excellent source of
information for learning about the new features found in Step-Up
Program Manager and WorkSpace. To help you on your Quick Start, we'll
mention a few of our favorite features that you might want to try
right away.
------------------------------
A Few of Our Favorite Features
------------------------------
Program Modes - Step-Up Program Manager has three different styles
that really make it unique. From the Options menu, select Mode. Try
each of the three (Program Manager, Desktop and SwitchBoard) to see
which one you like best.
Sort Groups - A real time saver if you have more than a few groups.
Click the a/z button on the Toolbar to sort the active group or use
the View Window As dialog from the Window menu to sort all your
groups.
Change group icons - Select one of several icons we provide or browse
for any other icon you'd like.
Display Styles - Display any group as Icons, a List or as a Toolbox.
Size the icons to your liking from very small to very large. Select
View Window As from the Window menu. Groups within groups - If you
have more than just a few groups, consider organizing them by placing
groups within other groups. If you have a group that is getting
especially large, break it up by creating new sub-groups. For
example, make sub-groups of your Games group for each category of
game you have -- like "Card Games", "Action Games", "Board Games",
etc.
Desktop Buttons - Drag any program item or any file from File Manager
to the Desktop to create a button for that application or file. This
is a great place for the programs and files you use the most.
Alarms - Don't be late for another meeting! Select Alarms from the
Options menu and fill in the details. You can also set a program to
run (like your backup) while you're away.
System Resource Monitor - Avoid a common cause of system crashes - low
system resources. You'll be notified when your resources drop below
a critical level (that you can set) and can take action to lower the
strain before a problem comes up.
Right Mouse Button - You may have already noticed that a right mouse
click will show you a menu of options that apply to the item where
you've clicked. It's great for easy access to common commands and
really reduces the "mileage" on your mouse.
Congratulations! Your installation of Step-Up Program Manager is
complete.

Questions and Trouble Shooting

Make sure you're using the latest version of Step-Up Program Manager.
The latest versions are always available on America Online, Compuserve
and Ziffnet (prodigy), along with our internet home page. See the
"how to contact us" info below for more info.
Q: I had to install again and keep seeing the "Purchase Now"
screen when I start windows. How do I make this go away?
A: Select "Purchase Now" from the sign-on dialog and then select
"Voice". Enter your name and registration data there.
Q: Can I use the same registered version on my home and work computers?
A: Yes, provided that the same registered copy is never in use simultaneously
by more than one person.
Q: I uninstalled and now I can't get back into Windows.
A: Make sure that windows program manager has been restored as your shell.
1. From a DOS prompt, go to your windows directory
"CD \WINDOWS"
2. Edit your windows system initialization file.
"EDIT SYSTEM.INI"
3. Look for a line that begins with "shell=" (It's usually in the
first dozen lines or so)
4. Make sure the line reads "shell=progman.exe". If it doesn't,
change it. This line tells windows which program to use as
your system shell. Progman.exe is the standard Windows Program Manager.
5. Save the file and exit the editor.
6. Start windows.
Q: How do I uninstall manually?
A: Follow the procedure outlined above to restore program manager as your
shell and then do the following.
1. Delete all files in the C:\STEPUP directory (if you installed to
a directory other than c:\stepup, delete the files in it.)
2. Remove the C:\STEPUP directory.
3. Delete the following files from your windows directory:
PMCONTRL.DLL PMSCROLL.DLL
PPGROUPS.DLL PMTOOL.DLL
PPCOMMON.DLL
4. Delete the following files from your WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory:
WHINNY.WAV FOGHORN.WAV
DIVE.WAV CUCKOO.WAV
