  15. Welcome to Step-Up Program Manager with WorkSpace. This document tells you 
  16. everything you need to know to get up and running as quickly as possible.

  33. We designed Step-Up Program Manager to be especially easy to learn and
  34. use.  We started with the skills you already have from using Windows'
  35. Program Manager and added dozens of enhancements that you'll
  36. certainly find indispensable.  
  37.  
  38. After installation, some of our new features are immediately evident,
  39. but you'll notice that Step-Up Program Manager still looks nearly
  40. identical to Windows Program Manager.  We've done this intentionally
  41. to allow you the opportunity to return to work without delay.  
  42. Everything you know how to do with Windows Program Manager works the
  43. same in Step-Up Program Manager.  All menus, keystrokes and groups
  44. are unchanged, just enhanced with dozens of new features!
  45.  
  46. WorkSpace may be something new to you.  WorkSpace allows you to
  47. create as many "virtual" desktops as you'd like and switch between
  48. them easily.  Now you can eliminate desktop clutter by creating new
  49. desktops.  Run related sets of applications on each desktop for easy
  50. organization.  The mini-view window gives you a clear view of what
  51. each desktop looks like.

  58. 1. Insert the Step-Up Program Manager installation disk in drive A:
  59. 2. From Windows Program Manager's File menu, select Run.
  60. 3. Type A:INSTALL and press Enter (or click on "OK")
  61. 4. Follow the instructions on the screen (some notes and hints follow)
  62.  
  63. The installation program asks you two questions 
  64.  
  65. 1. "Do you want to make Step-Up Program Manager your Windows shell?"  
  66.  
  67. If you don't already know what your Windows Shell is, it's the
  68. program that Windows runs first every time it starts.  The default
  69. program that Windows runs at startup is Windows' Program Manager.  By
  70. checking the box next to this question, you are telling Windows to
  71. use Step-Up Program Manager in place of Windows Program Manager as
  72. your shell.  We recommend that you install Step-Up Program Manager as
  73. your Windows shell.

  75. 2. "Do you want to add WorkSpace to the StartUp Group"
  76.  
  77. Important Note:  
  78. --------------- 
  79. WorkSpace is complimentary and is immediately unlocked once you've
  80. purchased Step-Up Program Manager. Until then, it is locked and will
  81. only display a short reminder message when you try to run it.

  83. Any program that you add to the StartUp group will be lauched
  84. automatically by Step-Up Program Manager each time you start
  85. windows.  By adding WorkSpace to your StartUp Group, it will run and
  86. restore your desktops each time you start windows.  We recommend that
  87. you allow the install program to add WorkSpace to your StartUp
  88. group.

  90. Installation should take about one minute (or less).  When completed,
  91. you must restart Windows so that the changes you've made to your
  92. system during the installation of Step-Up Program Manager can take
  93. effect.  If Step-Up Program Manager is your new Windows shell, you'll
  94. see it where Windows Program Manager used to be.

  102. We hope that you'll like Step-Up Program Manager and will purchase
  103. it.  However, if it doesn't suite your needs we've supplied a
  104. convenient uninstall program that will quickly remove Step-Up Program
  105. Manager and restore Window's original program manager as your system
  106. shell.  Since Step-Up Program Manager reads and writes the same group
  107. files as Windows' program manager, any changes you've made to your
  108. groups (like installing other products) will still be there.

  164. You'll find that the on-line help is an excellent source of
  165. information for learning about the new features found in Step-Up
  166. Program Manager and WorkSpace.  To help you on your Quick Start, we'll
  167. mention a few of our favorite features that you might want to try
  168. right away.

  172. A Few of Our Favorite Features
  173. ------------------------------

  175. Program Modes - Step-Up Program Manager has three different styles
  176. that really make it unique.  From the Options menu, select Mode.  Try
  177. each of the three (Program Manager, Desktop and SwitchBoard) to see
  178. which one you like best.
  179.  
  180. Sort Groups - A real time saver if you have more than a few groups. 
  181. Click the a/z button on the Toolbar to sort the active group or use
  182. the View Window As dialog from the Window menu to sort all your
  183. groups.
  184.  
  185. Change group icons - Select one of several icons we provide or browse
  186. for any other icon you'd like.
  187.  
  188. Display Styles - Display any group as Icons, a List or as a Toolbox. 
  189. Size the icons to your liking from very small to very large.  Select
  190. View Window As from the Window menu.  Groups within groups - If you
  191. have more than just a few groups, consider organizing them by placing
  192. groups within other groups.  If you have a group that is getting
  193. especially large, break it up by creating new sub-groups.  For
  194. example, make sub-groups of your Games group for each category of
  195. game you have -- like "Card Games", "Action Games", "Board Games", 
  196. etc.

  198. Desktop Buttons - Drag any program item or any file from File Manager
  199. to the Desktop to create a button for that application or file.  This
  200. is a great place for the programs and files you use the most.

  202. Alarms - Don't be late for another meeting! Select Alarms from the
  203. Options menu and fill in the details.  You can also set a program to
  204. run (like your backup) while you're away.
  205.  
  206. System Resource Monitor - Avoid a common cause of system crashes - low
  207. system resources.  You'll be notified when your resources drop below
  208. a critical level (that you can set) and can take action to lower the
  209. strain before a problem comes up.

  211. Right Mouse Button - You may have already noticed that a right mouse
  212. click will show you a menu of options that apply to the item where
  213. you've clicked.  It's great for easy access to common commands and
  214. really reduces the "mileage" on your mouse.

  217. complete.

  221. Questions and Trouble Shooting

  224. Make sure you're using the latest version of Step-Up Program Manager.
  225. The latest versions are always available on America Online, Compuserve
  226. and Ziffnet (prodigy), along with our internet home page.  See the
  227. "how to contact us" info below for more info.

  230. Q: I had to install again and keep seeing the "Purchase Now"
  231.    screen when I start windows.  How do I make this go away?
  232. A: Select "Purchase Now" from the sign-on dialog and then select
  233.    "Voice".  Enter your name and registration data there.
  234.  
  235. Q: Can I use the same registered version on my home and work computers?
  236. A: Yes, provided that the same registered copy is never in use simultaneously
  237.    by more than one person.
  238.  
  239. Q: I uninstalled and now I can't get back into Windows.  
  240. A: Make sure that windows program manager has been restored as your shell.
  241.    1. From a DOS prompt, go to your windows directory
  242.       "CD \WINDOWS"
  243.    2. Edit your windows system initialization file.
  244.       "EDIT SYSTEM.INI"
  245.    3. Look for a line that begins with "shell=" (It's usually in the
  246.       first dozen lines or so)
  247.    4. Make sure the line reads "shell=progman.exe".  If it doesn't,
  248.       change it.  This line tells windows which program to use as
  249.       your system shell.  Progman.exe is the standard Windows Program Manager.
  250.    5. Save the file and exit the editor.
  251.    6. Start windows.

  254. Q: How do I uninstall manually?
  255. A: Follow the procedure outlined above to restore program manager as your
  256.    shell and then do the following.
  257.    1. Delete all files in the C:\STEPUP directory (if you installed to
  258.       a directory other than c:\stepup, delete the files in it.)
  259.    2. Remove the C:\STEPUP directory.
  260.    3. Delete the following files from your windows directory:
  261.          PMCONTRL.DLL  PMSCROLL.DLL
  262.          PPGROUPS.DLL  PMTOOL.DLL
  263.          PPCOMMON.DLL  
  264.    4. Delete the following files from your WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory:
  265.          WHINNY.WAV  FOGHORN.WAV
  266.          DIVE.WAV    CUCKOO.WAV
